While it’s difficult for Saskatchewan drivers and families to imagine, car theft is currently on the rise in Canada. According to recent data, from January to April 2023, the number of vehicles reported stolen increased by 26.5% compared to the same period in the previous year. While many modern cars like Hyundai come with new technology to keep them secure, there's still always a risk of theft. And I think we can all agree that learning how to prevent your car from being stolen is a lot easier than tracking it down once it’s gone. Here at North Battleford Hyundai, we care about putting your safety first. That’s why we’ve compiled a few tips you can employ to keep your vehicle safe and avoid car theft.
This one seems like it should be a given, but you’d be surprised how many drivers forget this basic rule when quickly running in and out of a store or when they forget their wallet on the kitchen counter. Oftentimes thieves will tend to observe your routine and look for an opportunity to steal your car. You’ll deter them if you’re always in the habit of rolling up the windows, locking the doors, and taking the keys with you every single time you get out of the car. With Hyundai’s BlueLink or Digital Smart Key tech features, you can also lock and unlock your vehicle even from a distance, just in case you forget.
Kill switches have one major function: to prevent a car from starting. These can be wired to the ignition, fuel line, or battery. Install a kill switch in a hidden location and flip it every time you get out of the car. Even if someone gets a hold of your car keys, they won’t be able to go anywhere unless they find and flip that switch.
One of the more budget-friendly options on our list, a steering wheel lock hooks onto your steering wheel and locks into place with a special key. The long arm of the steering wheel lock bumps into the windshield or console if anyone tries to turn the car. The sight of a steering wheel lock is often enough to deter anyone looking for an easy target, but other people may use power tools to remove it. Pair a steering wheel lock with another anti-theft device for best results.
Some people steal cars in order to sell individual parts. But it’s risky to sell parts that have an identification number etched on them because they can be traced by law enforcement. Etching your VIN (vehicle identification number) onto each window of your car tells people you’ve taken steps to protect it from theft. It may not be enough to deter everyone interested in stealing your car, but it will keep some people away.
Even with Hyundai’s host of advanced tech features fine-tuned for your security in mind, with car theft on the rise in Canada, it never hurts to take some extra precautions. For more questions about your vehicle’s security, don’t hesitate to contact the team here at North Battleford Hyundai!
